Background of the Study

Substance abuse remains a significant public health challenge, contributing to increased morbidity, mental health disorders, and social instability. Globally, over 35 million people suffer from substance use disorders, with a substantial number requiring rehabilitation and medical intervention (World Health Organization, 2024). In Nigeria, substance abuse has been linked to unemployment, poverty, peer influence, and mental health issues, particularly among young adults (Adeyemi & Hassan, 2024). Bauchi State has experienced a growing prevalence of substance use disorders, with many affected individuals requiring specialized psychiatric nursing care for rehabilitation (Olawale & Musa, 2023).

Psychiatric nursing care plays a crucial role in the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients by providing therapeutic interventions, counseling, and relapse prevention strategies. Psychiatric nurses are responsible for administering detoxification programs, engaging in behavioral therapy, and ensuring that patients adhere to treatment plans designed to support long-term recovery (Garba & Sanni, 2024). Effective nursing interventions include cognitive-behavioral therapy, medication-assisted treatment, and psychosocial support to help patients reintegrate into society (Chukwu & Ibrahim, 2023).

Despite the significance of psychiatric nursing care, the effectiveness of these interventions in substance abuse rehabilitation remains understudied in Bauchi State. Evaluating the impact of psychiatric nursing care on patient outcomes can help improve rehabilitation programs and develop more effective treatment strategies for individuals struggling with substance use disorders.

Statement of the Problem

Substance abuse remains a growing concern in Bauchi State, with many individuals suffering from drug dependency, mental health complications, and social dysfunction (Williams & Yusuf, 2024). While psychiatric nursing care is a critical component of substance abuse rehabilitation, there are concerns regarding the availability, effectiveness, and accessibility of these services in the state (Bello & Adeyemi, 2023).

Challenges such as inadequate psychiatric training, limited healthcare infrastructure, and societal stigma often hinder the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing care in substance abuse rehabilitation. Without proper evaluation and improvement strategies, many substance abuse patients may relapse, leading to increased criminal activity, unemployment, and deteriorating mental health. This study aims to assess the impact of psychiatric nursing care on the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients in Bauchi State, identifying gaps and recommending interventions for better treatment outcomes.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of psychiatric nursing care on the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients in Bauchi State.
  2. To identify the challenges faced by psychiatric nurses in managing substance abuse patients.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving psychiatric nursing interventions in substance abuse rehabilitation.

Research Questions

  1. How does psychiatric nursing care impact the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients in Bauchi State?
  2. What challenges do psychiatric nurses face in providing care for substance abuse patients?
  3. What strategies can enhance psychiatric nursing interventions for substance abuse rehabilitation?

Research Hypotheses

H₀: Psychiatric nursing care does not significantly impact the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients in Bauchi State.
H₁: Psychiatric nursing care significantly impacts the rehabilitation of substance abuse patients in Bauchi State.

H₀: Psychiatric nurses do not face significant challenges in managing substance abuse patients.
H₁: Psychiatric nurses face significant challenges in managing substance abuse patients.

H₀: Implementing new strategies will not improve psychiatric nursing interventions in substance abuse rehabilitation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric nursing care in substance abuse rehabilitation centers and psychiatric hospitals in Bauchi State. It examines the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing interventions and the challenges nurses face in managing substance abuse patients. Limitations include variations in patient compliance, differences in treatment approaches, and potential stigma affecting self-reporting among patients. Findings may not be applicable to other regions with different healthcare systems.
